if you want a total do it yourself, no machining, no chemical dipping, just a range mutt kinda' job for the barrel you could always do a clamp on fsb (like this one from Armalite), and finish in one of the spray on finishes from Brownells like Aluma-Hyde II, or Gun-Kote in a nice dark parkerizing grey color
and since this is the retro forum....I can't recommend using a free float tube or any lower other than an NDS

I honestly would build another 603 out of it. You can sell the unfinished barrel and put the funds towards an original. but why would i need two 603? Good question. I have two, but I sure as hell don't need two! Technically my M16A1 is a 613, though.
Also, you can trade someone your 603 receiver for a 604 receiver. I lucked into an inexpensive 604 receiver a while back, so I'm going to build it up to go along with my 603's. |

Just sit back, brother, and let the disease take over! It hurts worse if you fight it! You "need" a 603 from each year from 1964 through 1982! You do! You may not know that yet, but you do. |

I like the range rifle idea with the barrel and coat it with alumahyde. Clamp on FSB, use the cheapest quality furniture and lower you can find. A free float rig might be cool but the set-up might shoot outstanding without it. That would get you shooting in a hurry. Personally I'd keep the upper receiver as nice as it is or swap for a 604 and probably build a flat top (not retro) that I could scope, but I'm nearly blind.
Remember asking me why I had 9 AR-15's? I like to build them also and when they shoot 1ish MOA I don't get rid of them and if they don't I usually screw with them until they do or quickly sell. One reason I keep initial cost's down, so they are easy to unload without losing any coins. Another idea would be use the upper and build a light weight retro carbine. Lot's of thin profile carbine barrels out there. An AR-15/M-16 retro carbine is a real good time. My favorite AR is the one I'm shooting at a specific time. I say build them while you still can. Figure in another ten years it will be highly illegal to do so with out a lot of red tape and coins. |

Sell the barrel and handguards, use money to help purchase a 16" superlight barrel and start on a proper XM177E2 clone. This is a great idea as well. Did XM177E2's use square forge upper receivers? If you don't want to do that, you can build an XM16E1 as well. |
