Been looking around and spotted this scope from Nikon. Is this a decent scope?

I have been using Nikon's P-Series scopes for years and never an issue. The P-223 3X Carbine scope is one of my favorites for spot and stalk hog hunting. Gets you on target quickly for an accurate shot. I have the P-223 3-9 on a LMT AR that has seen 1000's of rounds under it. Zero issues. Tought to beat the quality, dependability and warranty for the price of these scopes.

Pros: Seemed like a very good quality tube, held zero, with good turrets and a BDC for the money.
Cons: The glass is poor, even for a cheaper class of scope. I found it hard to see targets at the distance you would expect to shoot with that magnification. I sold mine, and went with a Redfield for a similar price. The Redfield doesn't have the pros of the Nikon, but the glass is much clearer. For that price range, you have to sacrifice something. For the P223, it seems it is glass quality/clarity. At least that was my experience, with a sample size of 1. |

Have written on this topic a few times. The 3x P223 is a great general purpose scope for the AR in 5.56. Pretty good glass for its price point. Zero resetable turrets make dialing dope easy (on the rare occasion it might be needed). Nikon's Spot On app allows you to get a pretty good matchup to your particular ammo with the Bullet Drop Compensating reticle. Not to big, and not too small. Decent sized objective lense for good light gathering ability.
I have one on an 18 inch 5,56 that has served me very well for the last few years. My scope "shot the square" and was dead on throughout. For the everyday AR shooter, they are a solid bargain in both cost and performance. Buy one. If you don't like it, email me

I picked up the 3x in a trade here a few years ago. It was the worst name brand glass I've ever looked through. The biggest issue for me was not being able to track with both eyes open, which I've never had a problem with above 2.5x magnification. In time I figured out it was the fish bowl effect around the edges coupled with using a long range reticle in a low power scope with awful glass. I would honestly rate this as the worst optic I've owned. |
| I have one on a mid length AR. The optic has been great for my needs. Pretty light weight, like the turrets and pretty clear. I got mine for $80 at a local pawn shop. |
