Staking as used in metal assemblies (such as firearms), refers to the technique of deforming two adjacent parts in unison with the intention of keeping them in place. Often used to prevent screws from turning once in place, it is also used to retain other parts that rotate, such as bearings, bushings and sleeves. Also used to keep dovetail-mounted sights in place and hold springs and pivot bars where they belong, such as the shell latch on Remington (and other) shotguns.

Places that you often find staking on AR's are, as mentioned, the carrier key/screws, gas block mounting screws, some forend retaining nuts and collars, and receiver extension retaining nuts, to name a few. Staking is an excellent way to keep parts assembled in their original positions as the mechanical lock, done correctly, is unaffected by heat, chemicals, water, of other outside agents.
