Hi,
I'm new to LE, and I want to buy an AR. Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about these guns. I want something simple with no frills. I want a flat top so that I can mount a good scope. I also want a 1 in 7" twist. It needs to be a 16" barrel and compatible with .223 ammo. Can someone suggest a good gun? I don't want to spend a lot of money, hopefully less than $1000. I can get the gun at cost. I was looking at the Colt AR-15A2 Gov't Carbine. Someone suggested a Rock River, but I didn't see any on their website with a 1 in 7". Any input I could get from you would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

I would look at theLMT carbines, or CMMG.

Best deal out there in my opinion when they are in stock. Daniel Defense with free shipping and hammer-forged barrel for $999 at AIM:

The 1/7 twist request shortens the list a bit. If you didn't already know, the 1/7 was specifically designed to spin the military's heavier 62 grain M855 projectile. 1/9 will do for most everything else.
LEO to LEO, get a Colt. Check out the LE 6920 Law Enforcement Carbine - the A2 Gov't doesn't have a flattop. Colt's A3 Tactical Carbine has a flattop and heavy barrel, but a 1/9 twist. LMT (Lewis Machine and Tool) rifles will also fit the bill for the 1/7. |
| Try here, this kit (with your choice of options) and a stripped lower, shipped (lower shipped to your FFL) $703.53 |

The Colt would be my choice. I just picked up my first Colt AR and it is nice, mine is the MT6700 Match target Hbar. Why are you wanting the 1n7 twist? What weight ammo does your dept issue? If they are using 55 grain ammo I would go with the 1n9 twist.
Not sure if you are aware of this but there is a difference between 5.56 and 223, the 5.56 is a hotter round, so no problem shooting 223 in a 5.56 barrel, but not the other way around. I know someone who is selling a really nice Colt Hbar, but it's not a flat top, let me know if you change your mind and I will oput you in contact with him. Good Luck NCH |

Read the first couple of pages of this thread here. It has excellent information. Here are the basics:
Colt, LMT, Bravo Company (BCM), Noveske, Daniel Defense, and CMMG are all considered to be duty quality weapons. Colt really only comes in two flavors. The others allow you to have it from the factory how you want it setup, or more how you would like it set up. |

Ask around your department or if you're in a small community ask some officer's in the surrounding areas. Someone will have a line on a source for close to cost. If at all possible buy it through your department, you'll save the federal excise tax that way.
If I were going to buy just one rifle and that rifle was going into harms way, it would be a Colt or a Lewis Machine Tool. I have lots of custom rifles that I would pick over them, but you limited yourself to around $1000. Noveske would be on a short list for more money. |
