| I bought a armalite 16inch upper to match up to my S&W lower, I am having failure to feed issues, Im ejecting rounds but not feeding another round. I understand it is probably short stroking and theres a problem with the gas system. I took a bolt carrier group out of my RRA and it function flawless, anyone had these issues? where should i start replacing parts, I was thinking gas rings? Is this a warranty item? any help would be appreciated |

Before you even consider your ftf issue.............
Did you check headspace? And what ammo are you using? Aloha, Mark PS............also............. http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=66&t=210213 and....... http://www.ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=3&f=66 |

Yes, gas rings could be your culprit. Yes, that should be warranted. Then again, bad gas rings on a new upper is weird. You could try replacing them so you don't have to send your upper away. I volunteered at our club range day with two AR10s, both of which had problems which were ID'ed as gas rings. I mean these rings were SHOT.
But the 223 guns we had ran without a hiccup all day long, and the 308s were probably T/E guns that someone conveniently forgot to maintain. |

Since you have a new barrel/chamber with the upper.........you should check the bolt and barrel for "headspace." FOR YOUR SAFETY.
__________________________________________________________________ The BC is just a carrier for the bolt. If, the BC won't "smoothly" interchange.........that means something is wrong there (or maybe w/ the upper). OK........I don't KNOW every brand personally. But IMHO, they should all interchange. I doubt that a mfn would want to be "out of the market" because he wants to make a "different BC" from the rest of the market that won't interchange. Yes, wear can be a factor and so can the "fit." Check it well. It could be a tight (or too loose) gas tube fit, too much friction with the upper, mis-alignment of parts, QC of parts with specs, etc........ __________________________________________________________________ As for the gas rings........well, you never mentioned how worn down they are or aren't. But, that being said..........ever tried to shoot with the gas ring gaps aligned? I've done it and had my rifle still function. My conclusion was: "It would take "a lot of gas leakage" to really %^&* things up." __________________________________________________________________ As for ammo.......... IMHO, testing should be done with good quality ammo. Not, some reloads made by Bubba. The exception being IF, you KNOW that Bubba makes ammo that is GTG. But THAT..............will bring us right back to the question of headspace. Cause, Bubba might be reloading his ammo to the long side of the acceptable headspace range. Then, when combined with a tight new barrel (new chamber or different chamber dimensions)............the ammo might have some difficulty working correctly with THAT new barrel. Not to mention if the ammo is "under powered." Aloha, Mark |
| Are you using full power brass ammo and lubing the uppers parts generously.Get your bolt and put it in the carrier and then hold up both parts by the bolt and if the carrier slips off then you will know for sure gas ring tension is the problem.Check carrier key for looseness. |
