Im getting ready to change my barrel on mytorqueriver. What wrench do you recommend ive heard that the thickness of the tool is a factor. Also what do you torque
the barrel at. |

These are around $10-20 I use these for the tube type and yhm type nuts: http://media.midwayusa.com/productimages/880x660/Primary/762/762854.jpg I use the troy tool for the troy trx and standard barrel nut (free with trx rails or around $12 or so): http://images2.opticsplanet.com/755-405-ffffff/opplanet-troy-trx-barrel-wrench.jpg +1 Tools designed for the specific job cannot be beat. |

Depends on what type of barrel nut you have on. Do you have a proprietary nut or a standard milsped barrel nut?
If standard, I prefer a specific barrel nut wrench rather than a hokey all in one pos from like ncstar or dpms. PRI barrel nut wrench is what I go with, as once you do enough you really don't even need a torgue wrench. Also torquing your barrel? You don't torque barrels. You torque the barrel nut, which isn't the barrel. Barrel nut torque is 30-80 ft lbs using the 3x method. If you cant fit in that spectrum you can try going to say 30ft lbs as many times as you have patience for to loosen it up. I always recommend to have an extra barrel nut on hand as if it's not lining up in that area to try the 2nd barrel nut. Now if you have a proprietary nut it's probably down to patience lol. I've gone to 95lbs on one build with a proprietary nut, and don't like it at all but it's held fine. Barrel nut and upper going to be replaced anyways so wasn't a biggy, but I do highly recommend to stay within the 30-80 region. You can easily eff your upper by over torquing, ntm when removing down the road you will probably trash your upper due to how insanely tight it will be (remember 30-80lbs going on will seem like a whole lot more than that when loosening) Milsped also calls for AeroShell 33ms grease on the threads. Some people use Loctite anti seize but I prefer using what is called for. Can get AeroShell 33ms in a tiny tub from Umbrella Corp online for 5$ since it's kind of a pita to find unless you buy a huge tube to a massive bucket on it. I use the grease for everything from springs in my fcg to punching roll pins in. Great stuff in every way. There is a ton of threads around here covering the subject, I suggest you search it up and research before you do. |
