I can see a "desire" to FF an AR bbl for acccuracy reasons if running a longer, 16+" bbl, or a skinny profile, BUT, I'd think that the shorter you get, as in SBR's, a bbl becomes so stout in regard to length, that this is a moot idea.

That said, has there been any real testing known that torques (real world pressures, from slings or otherwise),  barrels to check for a measured deflection on different bbl profiles?

Sure, it's nice to hang stuff on. Just seems like the cost of most rails is money better spent somewhere else.  Looks like they could be made WELL for much less money than they are.

FF tubes with slots, etc for only rail space where needed seem like the only practical choice.

I'm sure I'll get some   "buy chinese then" comments from somebody......

i havent seen any testing but i can tell you my 14.5 inch pencil barrels i can easily flex 1 or 2 mm's with pressure from one finger.  it doesnt take as much pressure as you'd think to flex lighter barrels.  even SBR length.

its not just about "hanging stuff".  i like longer rails (most people do).  it allows me to get my light further out to eliminate barrel shadow, and i like having my hand out a little further than a carbine length handguard will allow.

you know what if you think they are charging too much money, i invite you to do the following:  go out and start pricing the machines these guys are using, hire some engineers, rent a large warehouse, start paying overhead, spend money advertising, find some distributors, and see what you end up charging for yours.  theres a reason prices are where they are at, and i assure you these guys arent rolling in vast fortunes off the money they make building free float rails.

honestly the expensive (dd, larue, etc...) quad rails arent any heavier than most of the modular free float tubes with their little rail sections attached...assuming you dont cover the quad rail with heavy rail covers.

There are other benefits... the heat sink effect, etc...  And some arguement for reduced flex in the overall upper that could lead to bolt stresses during cycling.

That said... I still run KAC RAS non FF rails most of the time on short/carbine gas ARs.
