| is it possible to re-chrome an old barrel? |
|
Too many things say no, or not worth it...
Fist, you want to chrome one barrel? The palting house charges by the rack, it costs X dollars to dip a rack, it that rack is 50 barrels it is not bad, but the cost of one barrel would be as much as what it costs to just buy a new barrel. Second, I do not know of a chrome house that would run a "used" barrel, the contaminants in the metal are a concern and I doubt you would get any sort of guarentee as to the durability of the plating. Finally, when a barrel blank is ordered, it is made slightly oversize if it is going to be chromed –– hard chroming a barrel that is in spec, would make for a tight bore. All this considered... no. |

You buy an new one... it is worn out. Besides, a barrel does not wear out that way, the substrate material fails as does the plating, the throat area is ruined and there is no amount of plating that will save it –– you could set the barrel back, save for the fact that the AR barrel is not the right configuration for that.
Barrels wear out... |

CRAP! what happens when all the chrome is worn out of my barrel? What happens when your brake pads get worn down, buy new ones. Barrels have an expended life span. Most shooters will never wear out a barrel. I have a CAR15 that was purchased in the late 80s has about 6.5K or more through it. It still shoots fine. Once you get over the 10K round count, have the barrel inspected, mostly likely if it was well maintained( cleaned ) it would most likely be G2G. MMV |
