A couple of words and some of the explanation got me confused. But I think I got it down. What were you trying to do? Replace or upgrade what? I understand that you closed the vise too much and this compressed the upper, right? Now the charging handle and bolt assembly don't function as they are meant to.This is causing the malfuntion. The olny alternative I can thinkof is that you may have to replace the upper. Unless you know a good gunsmith that is willing to take a chance and take out the high spots. But then you run the risk of injury when you fire it. If it is damaged like you say. You may just want to suck it up and buy the new upper. IMHO.

you are right on the money. That is what happened. When I typed bent, it is not off that much at all. Barely visable to the naked eye, but with calipers I think it would show up. By putting some pressure on the spot where I crunched it will open the upper and allow the BC to slide forward. I was attempting to take off the barrel nut with out useing an action block in the vice. The nut came off and the free float went on. everthing lines up without a problem and I can put the entire AR back together. The problem is the BC catching. Chargeing handle runs through smooth also. The protion of the upper where the mag well is slightly bowed rather then, bent like a can!!
