The Arizona Republic
Feb. 15, 2003 09:09 PM

The Arizona Highway Patrol were mystified when they came upon a pile of smoldering wreckage embedded in the side of a cliff rising above the road at the apex of a curve. The metal debris resembled the site of an airplane crash, but it turned out to be the vaporized remains of an automobile. The make of the vehicle was unidentifiable at the scene.

The folks in the lab finally figured out what it was, and pieced together the events that led up to its demise. It seems that a former air force sergeant had somehow got hold of a Jet-Assisted Take-Off (JATO) unit. JATO units are solid-fuel rockets used to give heavy military transport airplanes an extra push for takeoff from short airfields.

Dried desert lakebeds are the location of choice for breaking the world ground vehicle speed record. The sergeant took the JATO unit into the Arizona desert and found a long, straight stretch of road. He attached the JATO unit to his car, jumped in, accelerated to a high speed, and fired off the rocket.

The facts, as best as could be determined, are as follows:

The operator was driving a 1967 Chevy Impala. He ignited the JATO unit approximately 3.9 miles from the crash site. This was established by the location of a prominently scorched and melted strip of asphalt. The vehicle quickly reached a speed of between 250 and 300 miles per hour and continued at that speed, under full power, for an additional twenty to twenty-five seconds. The soon-to-be pilot experienced G-forces usually reserved for dogfighting F-14 jocks under full afterburners.

The Chevy remained on the straight highway for approximately 2.6 miles (fifteen to twenty seconds) before the driver applied the brakes, completely melting them, blowing the tires, and leaving thick rubber marks on the road surface. The vehicle then became airborne for an additional 1.3 miles, impacted the cliff face at a height of 125 feet, and left a blackened crater three feet deep in the rock.

Most of the driver's remains were not recovered; however, small fragments of bone, teeth, and hair were extracted from the crater, and fingernail and bone shards were removed from a piece of debris believed to be a portion of the steering wheel.

Ironically, a still-legible bumper sticker was found: "How do you like my driving? Dial 1-800-EAT-SHIT."

Madmooses is obviously refering to the combined speed of both vehicles.

I have a buddy who have survived wrecking a little jap crotch-rocket at some super sonic speed (i think about 120mph when he layed it down) with just a concussion and a few scratches to show for it.

But 165mph in a truck? Damn.

I've worked a 75mph vs 75 mph crash with all occcupants restrained.  Driver of first car (drunk on wrong side of road) came out of car in three pieces, not pretty.  Driver (dad) and two kids in back seat dead in other car.  Mom and 2 yr old lived, spent several months in the hospital.

I call BS on walking away from something like that.

I'll try and find the pics of the cars and post them later.

90+75=165, thats how they figure out speeds in wrecks,  And i messed up my right arm pretty good, no broken bones though, and I strained my back, And my lil nissan p/u isnt and wasnt a good investment the other truck, a chevy, is repairable mine aint im getting $4500 back and i already bought another truck

And my last truck, (an '86 f-150 with a 515ci stroker), i got a ticket for 147 mph while i was drag racing against my buddies '79 chevy nova. the cops didnt get the nova til the next day cuz they couldnt catch him

If you have a habit of driving like this maybe the best use of that money would be to retain a lawyer...sooner or later you'll need him.

Seriously, slow down before you kill someone.

Ever heard of Manslaughter and Assualt with a deadly weapon.  That is what the Judge gives you when you hit some poor family with 3 small children in their stationwagon while tbey are on their way home from church on a Sunday.  I do have a Hot Rod that will do over 150 and have driven it that fast but I also have a brain and don't endanger anybody else when I drive.  And yeah my roll cage, 5 point harness, and helmet comes in handy if I was to ever get in a crash.  I don't feel like Murdering anybody because I enjoy the thrill of driving fast.  You should too!
2/17/2003 12:53:18 PM EDT
[#36]
three words:
slow. down. asshole.

seriously, driving fast is not funny. i should know it nearly cost me my life.  i otfen remarked about driving fast saying that i know the dangers and resposibilities a chose to accept them.  the problem is this- you are also accepting responsibility for everyone else on the road when you drive like a retard. i almost lost my life two years ago in my turboed out volkswagen. yeah i had taken it up to 150 solid as a rock blah, blah, blah but i lost control one day coming home from work and weaving in and out of traffic and hit a tree at about 50mph.  it devestated the car and my body, i was in a coma with two deflated lungs, bleeding internally, etc. my parents who live 5 hours away were notified to FLY to the hospital immediately.  i was in a coma for a week. for what? speed? an adrenaline rush of smoking ricers out of the gate? really... really sad, that that was what my life amounted to.
if speed is your thing take it to the track, invest in a roll cage and a helmet, and stay the hell away from me and my family!!!
seriously i say this in full acknowledgement of my own hypocracy... but if you dont learn a simple lesson like this now...
you will learn it when (like me) you wake up without vital organs, a job, money, your wife, etc., etc., etc.

use the money and buy a "track" car...
and get a bicycle for the street!

It was a private road, no one was supposed to be on, and i did have a 4 point harness on, and i dont normally drive that fast, i save the speed for closed or private roads, or the drag track and yes ive learned my lesson( I need a bigger truck) So thanx for all the concern, And my uncle is a Really good lawyer
