i noticed that my bolt catch spring is tapered. one end is larger than the other. which end goes in first before the plunger?

i noticed if i put the smaller end first, it would hinder the functioning of the plunger.

That's the disconnector spring. You have the two mixed up. The large end of the spring you are talking about goes down inside the trigger channel. You have to kind of work (screw/wiggle) it in.

the last portion of the spring was a bit off and the well for the spring needed  to be cleaned.

So are you saying you put the flared spring in the bolt catch release spring hole?
