I asked this question in a previous post, but I think it got over looked. I am planning on a build. I think I have all questions answered except this one.
Do you think it's better to go with the Bushy carbon bolt so I can have a shorter tube or is it better to go with the longer tube so I can use a standard bolt group and have a functioning forward assist and dust cover?

I would stay with standard parts, if you ever need to replace anything down the road it will be easier.

It's up to you.  The Bolt CARRIER is the part that's different.  Yeah, if anything breaks you'll have an easier time replacing it... but understand that you can ALWAYS replace the bolt carrier and buffer tube with standard parts later, same/same.  Me, I would and did go with the Bushy system to save half a pound and nearly four inches.  Just a little more work to cut off the bolt carrier to the right length.  Well, well worth it.

are you sure you know what you are wanting to replace?

most bolts i have seen are of similar length and have no effect on any "tubes"

He's talking about the short bolt for the Bushy Buffer as seen in my tacked thread.

the bolt itself is the same size as a std one is it not?

No, it is shorter and lighter.

the bolt itself or are you referring to the carrier as well?

i see wher the carrier itself is shorter and lighter but the bolt looks to be a std. bolt

picture of a bolt for those that dont know the difference

We're arguing about semantics.  It's the bolt CARRIER that's shorter as I said -- correcting him -- in my first post.  He's probably just using "bolt" to describe the whole assembly.   When I modified the bolt CARRIER, I basically cut and chamfured the Carrier which means that part is easilly made from a standard bolt carrier.  The only non-standard parts are the buffer, spring, and buffer tube.

Sorry
Yes I mean the bolt carrier.
In one of BadgerArms post he mentions using Bushmasters carbon fiber pistol bolt carrier and buffer tube.
Am I correct in assuming using this carrier, I will have a non working forward assist and no dust cover?
Is not having a dust cover and a forward assist worth saving 3-4 inches of buffer tube?

The dust cover DOES work if you close it on a bolt that's locked open.  The forward assist does NOT work.  If you'd like, you can cut your bolt carrier short.  I'd suggest you wait a bit and check the tacked thread.  I cut my bolt carrier about a month ago and will try to take/post pictures this weekend.... maybe.

So if I use a cut carrier, then the cover and forward assist would work, right?

Correct.

Ooooh , I like that.

I have a friend that works in a machine shop. Can you give me the exact measurements that it needs to be cut at? and any other details that he may need

Check the tacked thread.  It's got the instructions there.

Awesome job with the pics and instructions. Now it is clear.
Thanks a bunch.

I will never build another one without useing the bushmaster short system.  3 -4 " on a 6 or 7" upper makes a lot of difference IMO.  On the longer brl. uppers I don't mind the longer tube as much.
