I know this has probaby been asked about a million times but I couldn't find the answer I wanted. Is a bore guide necessary when cleaning your ar? I use screw together brass rods on all my other guns I just don't see brass messing anything up. What do you guys use bore snake, rods, or anything o haven't though of. Thanks for the help.

I use Sinclairs AR bore guide. It's real nice and a nice piece of equipment for the price.

We dont use bore guides on either M4s or even Mk12 SPRs. If you are trying to minimize bore damage from cleaning, use a otis cable, thats what we do on SPRs. M4s we mostly use the crappy army issue steel rods, but our M4 barrels generally are shot out due to throat erosion and not due to bore damage. FYI I use the steel issue rod, and I go thru a barrel every 18-24 months or so. They are ALWAYS shot out due to throat erosion, but are still grouping.

Thanks for the advice. So I take it that the crappy gi steel rods are not that bad after all. Prob not the cream of the crop but they work. How many rounds do yall put down the rangw when yall shoot out a barrel?

A bore guide may not be needed, but they sure make using a Jag. and bore patch a lot simpler.

JP makes a really nice one. ( Look Here ) It's a little pricey...but nice. I'll use a bore snake at the range, but never clean my rifles at home without it. It makes it so much easier.

+1 on making it easier to use patches or a brush.  I like the Dewey bore guide:

Midway AR 15 Dewey Bore Guide

I also protects from solvent drips.  You can buy replacement O-rings if needed.  You can buy more expensive guides, but this one works GREAT!

Midway has one on sale $13, just ordered mine so I don't know what it's like yet.  Wanted it to help with getting patches safely into the bore and keeping solvent from getting in the upper and bolt lugs.

Necessary: No.

Easier: Hell yeah.. and faster too.

Worth the coin IMHO.

I started the treat and here is what I have learned from it. I recently had only one ar, a stag that I cleaned with clp, 3 piece brass rods, and a bore snake. I recently just purchased an lmt and decided to just make the plunge. I went on brownells and bought a dewey coated cleaning rod and a dewey bore guide. I spent around 60 bucks with shipping and now ill have it forever.  Dewey makes quality stuff and I'm happy with it and now have no need to worry. If your worried about it just spend a little extra and be done with it. That's what I did.
