I'm going to be picking up some kind of rubber aerosol spray to do parts of my handgrip.  It got me to thinking.  Has anyone ever taped of their upper reciever and sprayed some of that stuff on the face of the stock brass deflector?  Seems like that would look a lot nicer than the electrical tape solution and be more durable as well.

Personally I have never done anything to my brass defleactor other than wipe the brass residue off of it when needed. On the other hand I beat my rifles to hell and dont worry about the finish.

liquid electrical tape or "plasti-dip" would work as well and could just be brushed on..and peeled off (provided you prep right)

I have been both at different times. I am military right now but I am speaking about my personal rifles, not my issued one.

tape, velcro, whatever on the deflector

Liquid electrical tape would work well but would not look much better. I always think its hilarious that guys put electrical tape on the brass deflector...yeah that looks much better then the tiny marr marks from the brass hitting the deflector.

I am sure that some of you sit at home at night and wipe your rifles down with a diaper and talk sweet lovin to them, and I understand that they are an investment and you have every right to treat them as such, but they are made to use and abuse so go out and trash em up a bit, then that little brass mark on the deflector wont bother you all that much.

upper recievers are only $90.

you should just get five or six of them and replace your upper every time you shoot.

Some of you guys aren't getting the point.  I use my guns.  I still want them to look as good as they can though.  Just because you take care of how your rifle looks doesn't mean you can't use it.  There's a compromise of both.  This is for a varmint/target rifle btw.

Well I have learned to love the look of a well used AR! Because thats what they look like when you actually shoot them. I use to be the other way but you have officially converted me and helped me with my demons.

+1.

I've shot a lot of ammunition through M16's and M-4's. Never saw a brass deflector that was that dinged up from brass. Most of the serious wear marks comes from people banging them around.

"Use" is a very subjective term.  I took a newly built carbine out last week.  You'd probably have a heart attack if you saw how we shoot.  I don't abuse, but my weapons aren't afraid to get bumped and bruised, and it happens...a lot.

sounds like a plan, and you can plug up the barrell with wax to make sure that you don't get any dust in the bore, and then shrink wrap the gun in plastic to make sure moisture doesn't affect it!!  I do it all the time

You could disable the gas system and carfully hand eject each case

Or you could just leave it in your safe and let it look pretty.

From my humble experience I think you can do something about it if you really want, without putting a covering on the deflector.

My first AR was an ArmaLite 16" Mid-Length.  It spits out casings from all types of ammo at 1:00 to 3:00 perfectly.  It does not leave any marks on the shell deflector because no cases hit it.  The ejector spring, along with everything else, is tuned just so it works that way and it came that way from the factory.

My second AR is a 20" rifle from Del-Ton and every case hits the deflector and leaves a mark before flying out towards 4:00 to 5:00.  I have purchased several extra ejector springs and may play with their length some day.

I just received the rest of the parts I need to assemble my third AR today.  It will be interesting to see where they fly, especially since it's one of the ArmaLite LEO carbines from the sales they had.

What a stupid comment.

The AR was conceived as a fighting rifle.  Some people buy them so they can look cool while they stand behind a bench/shooting line on a range that won't allow firing more than one round every 3 seconds.  Others buy them because they plan to be ready for when the zombie hoards arrive or because of some crazy book they read about some MadMax scenario.  People also buy them because they value the ability to fight with a rifle or need one to get extra training with something similar to what they carry at work.

The non-bench shooters, especially those who use a rifle at work TRAIN with their arms.  Training with a rifle involves dynamic shooting, to include running/moving with a rifle-and shooting on the move, shooting from varied positions/cover, weapon transitions, etc.  Your rifle will rub and bump your other gear and against barricades.  You might even scratch your magwell by not being super precise inserting a fresh mag while keeping your eyes on target.  I know this is going to be a shocker, but it might even mean shooting in the rain because by the time you showed up to the range the weather changed.

Just because your rifle doesn't look as blem free as it did when you purchased it, doesn't mean you're a wife beater, or trying to look macho.  When these rifles get used as they were intended, they get WORN.

I just let mine take the beating, but if you want something to put on it try cutting a piece of a decal-grip (rubber kind) and sticking it up there.  It will work and stay put.  I've seen it done on some rather expensive hard to get MGs of foreign manufacture that get babied due to their not readily replaceable status.

I'm sure you're a great guy, and obviously a long time member since 2001 or before.  That's why I'd like to remind you about the AR15 technical forums, and how it really has nothing to do with your opinion of someone's life, but rather more to do with the AR15  itself . . .

This post is also not directed at MashBill here, but the rash of similar posts above, and the topic at hand too.  For cripes sake, wanting to keep your deflector clean isn't really different than wanting your barrel clean after firing too!

I've posted my technical input in a post further above.

Buy some titanium otis cleaning brushes, if I didnt have them my lower would be full of brass marks before I even fired it. (My aim with a brass hammer sucks and I get in a hurry during asembly)

Simply scrub it off take a dry cloth wipe it and it comes clean.

You could always use some of your girlfriend's/wife's clear nail polish to coat it with, and scrub and re-apply as it gets scratched off. The maxi pad thing might work too but might be a little bulky. Maybe LaRue or somebody could make little brass deflector condoms you put on before shooting, and toss when you're done?
