i just purchased my first AR, and it came with the known problem of a bad buffer detent spring. i ordered and received the new part, and installed it. the problem is...everytime the bolt carrier travels rearward, the detent pops up into the carrier, and then gets taken forward to fall into the trigger area of the lower, thus leaving only the spring to retain the buffer, which obviously isnt going to happen. where exactly is this detent supposed to fit on the buffer to hold it back? what am i doing wrong?

Sounds like the buffer tube needs to be adjusted forward (screwed) to hold the rim of the buffer detent

If you have an A1/A2 stock.... your buffer tube is out of spec, or your lower receiver is.

If you have an telestock.... You either need to turn your telestock buffer tub in one more revolution, or you lower is out of spec, or your buffer tub is out of spec.

If your buffer tube, when it turns in one more revolution, will not allow the upper to close on the lower because it is sticking out into the receiver area:  You can either return your tube or lower for replacement, or just file the tube on the TOP part until the upper will close on the lower.

bingo! it was the tele-stock not being screwed in far enough to hold the pin. thanks ALOT for the info.
