Building up new lower and the buffer detent broke.  The detent broke into two pieces.  I installed another,  hand cycled the action a few times and checked and the new detent was bent very bad.  What is going on?

I'm in no means an expert--I've built 2 lowers in the last couple months.  So, I'm just guessing, until the experts chime in.

Did you screw in the receiver extension too far, to where it was pushing on the detent and not letting it pop up and down freely?

What stock are you using? Did you put a full size spring into a 4/6 position stock? If the spring has too much force, it will slam the buffer into the detent with force enough to bend/break it. 9mm kits will do this too.

Is the rifle completely assembled (i am assuming so since you "cycled by hand"), double check that when you put the upper onto the lower that the carrier pushes the buffer off the buffer retainer (i think this is what you are talking about) just slightly. The buffer should NOT contact the retainer with the rifle assembled. If it does, you need to find out why.

The buffer retainer will not hold up long if the buffer strikes it during cycling. You may have something out of spec as well. Does the carrier come pretty much flush with the back of the upper? Does the barrel extension come pretty much flush with the inside of the upper? Just a couple things to check. If it turns out to be the retainer hole out of spec, run without it.

Let us know how it turns out.

I wouldn't run without it.   What if you have to tear down your gun due to some type of malf during a shtf scenario  and, in the heat of the moment, you forget you don't have the detent in?  you are SOL.

If indeed that is what it is, contact the manufacturer and have it replaced/fixed.  I am sure they won't have a problem resolving your issue if it is a QC issue

If you have a barrel in you upper ,this should not be possible (do you have a barrel in  the upper??)
The barrel(extension)should stop the bolt carrier before the buffer hits the retainer pin

Possibilities

retainer pin hole drilled wrong (most likely) seen that before

Out of spec take down holes in either the upper or lover ,this could let the upper sit to far forward  (seen that to ,,once)

you did pay for a correct lover ,,contact the dealer you bought it from

noveske lower cmt upper.  I am building up a 9mm gun.  I am using a 6 position tube 9mm buffer and CAR recoil spring.  There is currently no barrel in this gun, waiting on TROS.  I guess the lack of barrel is allowing the buffer to contact the detent with alot of force.  I need to be patient and wait for my barrel.

Here is a crazy thought for you.  I have made detent pins out of nails.  Basically I get a hardened nail and put it in a drill or Dremel to spin it.  Then use a file to shape it roughly.  Then I use sand paper and smooth it down.  Last I polish it and heat treat it (to re-harden the steel).  Hope that helps, my handmade detent pins have never broke and add a level of satisfaction to an otherwise simple build.

Yep ,,get a new detent ,and be happy that it wasnt something more expensive

just a tip ,,never shoot without a buffer ,or to short a buffer that would be expensive

That is why the retainer broke. Do not cycle until you have a barrel in the upper. The barrel (extension) is what stops the BCG before the buffer makes contact with the retainer.

Edit: Yep, that was a cheap lesson.

If you are having to disassemble your rifle in a "SHTF Scenario" having to pick up and reinstall your buffer and spring, will be the LEAST of your worries.
