i just got my kit in the mail today but it wont fit properly onto the pin it seems to have been cut with one side of the tube further out than the other does anyone know if i am supposed to file that part down so it fits or should i send it back for a new one??

Do not file that portion of the buffer tube down. When the buffer tube is screwed into the lower receiver that tab that sticks out keeps the buffer retainer pin secure.

While holding the buffer retainer pin down, run the buffer tube in until the tab contacts the buffer retainer.

Huh?

First, don't file on anything. Nothing in the kit should need filed on.

Second, try explaining what the problem is again.

Try downloading either the military -23 manual or the Colt Mtx manual and reading through the instl instructions for the carbine stock.

I need a clear shot of the end of the buffer tube. The most important part of the photo above is in a shadow.

and that is with it holding the retainer pin and its still facing the wrong way

Looks like you just need to back the buffer tube out just a bit until the buttstock is correctly positioned. In this position the lip on the buffer tube should still make enough contact to retain the buffer retainer pin.

i unscrewed it slightly and it just fell back in the hole =/

Do you even have the buffer retainer spring installed?

I suggest you either read the manuals I linked to above, or go to the BIY forum and read the tacked thread on lower receiver assembly.

Well if your going to build that upper your self, but don’t yet have the funds, that will give you ample time to study up on upper receiver assembly.

read this:

i'd highly suggest you buy your upper complely assembled for now

the lower is the easiest and least complicated to assemble, and uppers have a few more things that need to be installed properly to ensure functioning

The writer covers it in step 9 but uses different terminology so I can see how you might overlook it.
