I would like to know what weight recoil buffer I can use on a M4 upper
that has the gas port drilled out to .093in. The reason the gas port was
opened up to this size is because this rifle used to have the old counterpoise
system. I am not using the counter weights or the original buffer because
both are FUBAR. I would like this rifle to be dependable with this gas port
size. So, if anybody can help with any suggestions, I would like to replace
the recoil buffer with a heavy weight but do not know which one. By the way,
the barrel length is 14.5in. with phantom flash hider. I know about the adjustable
gas tubes by MGI, but would rather not go in that direction unless necessary.

well a 9mm Buffer is 5.7 ounces..I dont know how much resistance the old system gave but theres always the enedine buffer, that will give even better cusion for something thats gonn run a bit harder than normal.I dont know who does it but I have heard of inserts that can make the port hole a normal size again.I think for 14.5 its .060 or 063 not sure.

No amount of heavy buffer is likely going to make up for this large of a port.
Cut the barrel down to 10" and it should run fine.
If you want to keep it at 14.5", you should really fix the gas port rather than patching all the problems that it creates.
I charge $25 to install a bushing in the barrel to reduce the port size back down to spec.

Thanks for your reply, my main concern is that the older set up was quite heavy and
that this was used in order to delay unlocking of the bolt before the pressure has dropped.
I thought about replacing the current buffer with the hydraulic unit, but was concerned
about the bolt unlocking too soon. I read somewhere that the MGI buffer was quite
heavy which slowed down unlocking and allowed recoil to spread out in recoil. Due to their high cost, I would try the MGI buffer as a last resort. I was considering using a buffer for a 9mm in my AR, but did not know whether it would function properly. I also read that the 9mm buffers come in different weights. Does anybody know where I can purchase these units at a cheaper price other than SAW equipment or has anyone tried these heavier buffers? Does the enedine unit slow down bolt unlock or does it only dampen recoil? Thank you.

The Conterpoise system was early MGI.

If it is FUBAR, im twl and ask him.  I suspect is is covered by their lifetime warranty and they will replace any FUBAR parts.

AR15 BARRELS Thank You for your reply, I did not know my barrel  can  be repaired with a
bushing to bring the gas port down to spec. I would like to know if this type of repair would
last. If this repair will fix my barrel gas port, then I will go in that direction. Can you possibly  give me a turn around time upon receiving the upper? Thanks for the info.

He works rather quickly.  Shouldn't take too long, I would imagine...

Simple jobs like this are usually turned around in 2-3 days.
