hello, i am about to put together my first ar. what are roll pin punches and where can i get them? where can i get a front pivot pin spring installation tool, or what can i use to help put this piece in? is there a usgi bolt assembly/disassembly tool and where can i get one? thanks. dustin |
You don't need any of that stuff. I had a small punch laying around already and I used a small tack hammer and a pair of needle nose pliers. I used a scrap piece of 2X4 as my "workbench". I am a complete newb with an AR15 and had my lower together in 30 minutes thanks to these fine folks right here. |

There are usually fairly cheap sets of punches for sale at gun shows, but you can get them from Bushmaster, Brownells or any number of other vendors. I think you'll be able to find the pivot pin detent tool as easily, but that installation is doable by hand. You're really going from the ground up if you'll need a bolt assembly tool. Look at the same places. But as sel366 said, you really don't need much to put one together. |
Yeah, if you go that route and "completely" build from the ground up you will need a vise and a barrel wrench. I went the "rifle kit" route from Del-Ton. Then I built my own lower with the parts kit that came from Del-Ton with the upper. Very fun and educational experience. This is a GREAT site for info!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| As for the Front pivot pin spring install.....save your money and buy this...click here. Another guy on this site told me about this inexpensive little piece that saves me time and $. I got one at Lowes for $1.25. It's a clevis pin. The one I got was 1/4" x 1.5". It has multiple holes already drilled into the pin and it can basically be used just like a standard front pivot pin intall tool...but for only $1.25!!! Check it out in the screws/fastner area of Lowes or Home Depot. |
+1 this is easy and cheap and works like a champ. I added a 2 gallon ziploc bag to my build kit to perform the front pivot pin install inside incase the detent starts flying. Alos, get a small piece of 2x4 (off cut from a construction site for free) to put under the receiver trigger guard ear when driving that pin. |
