I have the buttstock removed, and Im ready to put it back on. I have all the peices needed, but am wondering about one little piece. There is a small spring with some sort of cap over it inside the place you screw the buttstock in. What do you do with this, do you have to push it down and screw it in over top of it, or just screw the stock in untill it hits this thing. I have no idea what its purpose is. Ive already broken the detent spring, and I dont want to break anything else. Thanks

That's the retainer for the buffer.  Get the buffer tube started in the threads, then insert the spring into the hole with the retainer over it.  Depress the retainer and screw the buffer tube in until it holds the retainer in place.  Then you're all set!

Once I get the buffer tube started into the threads, how can I get to the spring and buffer to push it down? Sorry for my lack of knowledge, Im trying to pick up on this AR15 stuff.

A1/A2 lower?  You can just screw it in until it compresses the spring, just make sure the spring doesn't bend 90 degrees and get sandwiched and bent between the buttstock and the lower receiver.  I did that one once.

CAR stock?  Then you have a little plate that you can put into place after the stock is screwed most of the way in.

Im installig a tele stock if that makes a difference. If I keep screwing the stock in after it comes in contact with the buttstock, it will just break it in half. I dont know about that little plate, I dont think I have one, but I wish I did.

I'm not sure if we are talking about the same spring & cap or not.  There are 2 involved here, the buffer retainer and buffer retainer spring, and the takedown pin detent and takedown pin spring.  The buffer parts fit inside the lower receiver and are held in place by the receiver extension tube.  The takedown parts are held in place by the buttstock.

See the little plate hanging down in front of the locknut collar?  That retains the spring.

You back off the collar, screw the buttstock in far enough to engage the buffer retainer.  Insert the take down pin and take down spring, press the plate against it and tighten the locknut collar.

We were talking about two different parts. I am not having trouble with the takedown pin spring, or the takedown srping detent. I am having a problem with the buffer retainer spring, and the buffer retainer. I dont know ow to push them down so I can screw my buttstock in all the way. I got the part names down now, I have a poster from bushmaster w/ all the parts and names on it.

I think I have it figured out. All you have to do is pull out the takedown pin.

I guess I dont have it all figured out. Are you suposed to screw the buttstock over the buffer retainer and spring, or not? When I do screw it all the way over it, I cant close the upper onto the lower, and when I dont, I pull back the bolt, and it sticks because the buffer retainer holds it back. What am I doing wrong?

A proper CAR stock has an extra lip on the bottom of the threaded tube that is for retaining the buffer retainer pin.

You screw the stock in far enough for that lip to secure the edge of the buffer retainer pin, but not the whole pin.  (shelf of the pin, not the tip - basically about 1/3 the width)
