I'm sure this has been asked before , but I'm new.  Can the chrome be damaged by any of the copper solvents out there?  If so which ones are safe to use?

They should all be safe, just follow the directions.

I asked because i remember hearing that the ammonia in some copper solvents will break down chrome, i'm just being cautious.

Copper, not chrome.

Some of the stronger copper solvents can damage bright nickel if it's allowed to soak on the finish.
The solvent can infiltrate under the nickel through any thin spots, cracks, or scratches and attack the copper undercoat.  This can cause the bright nickel to lift off and start flaking off.

Hard chrome, as used in rifle bores and gas systems is not attacked by solvents.
As always with bore solvents, read the bottle label for recommended soak times.

It's been known for some time that copper cleaning solvents are hard on nickle plated guns, but I have never heard any problems with coppers solvents being harmful on chrome.

Ammonia based solvents will pit stainless steel if left in contact for several hours. A chrome lined barrel should be impervious to any cleaner you could use.
