Are there any disadavantages to compact scopes? Can anyone recommend a decent compact 2-8 or 3-9x40 scope that is less than $150? I dont want lighted reticles, target turrets, or anything else to complicate it.

Do you want compact or 3-9X40?  If you're looking for something in that magnification range and that is your budget, your options are going to be kind of limited.  What comes most immediately to mind is the Burris Timberline line of scopes.  Check them out.  Comparing them to the likes of Bushnell Elite, Weaver V or Zeiss will show their weaknesses, but for the money and your magnification demands, they are probably going to be about the best that you can get.  I had one of the 4X scopes.  It was clear enough, just didn't do well in low light.

I'm not really sure of what you mean by disadvantages?  Typically with a compact, you have to "settle" for a smaller objective which in turn means a smaller exit pupil (some scopes with really good glass aren't as affected), but I wouldn't call a 40mm objective small.  I guess a disadvantage is that compact scopes usually don't come in higher magnifications.  That's the trade off to having a compact scope.  Personally, I like compacts and scopes on the smaller side.  My smallest scope has a 16mm objective and my biggest scope has a 32mm objective.
