I am an AR newbie. I have a Doublestar M4 with a 4140 chrome moly barrel. I'd like a chrome-lined barrel for the rifle. If I purchase a new upper with a chrome-lined barrel, will this solve my problem? In other words, is that all I'd have to do, just swap out uppers? J&T, Doublestar's maker, has a complete upper with chrome-lined barrel.
Thanks for your help. |

Are you wanting a chrome lined barrel for the (lower?) maintenance issue, the slightly longer barrel life, or the status of chrome? Chromoly barrels tend to be more accurate. They clean up just fine, and you'd probably not notice the difference in barrel life. Yes, all you need to do is swap uppers if you don't want to take it apart and reassemble it. Good luck whatever you decide. |

I wouldn't bother with getting a chrome barrel. I have both chromed and non-chromed barrels and there is no difference. Chrome linings are not magic. They were added to the military rifles to solve rust problems back in the jungles of Viet Nam. There are millions of rifles in use without chrome lined bores that have lasted and functioned fine.
Look at all the WW2 rifles used by all the combatants, none had chrome lined barrels yet many of these rifles still survive after over 60 years and are still being shot quite accurately. Don't fall for the hype that your rifle is no good without a chrome lined barrel, its just not so. If you really just have to have one, and have money to spend on it, just pick up a barrel and put it on your rifle. You can sell your old barrel. Or, if you don't want to bother with that, do the upper exchange. I know you can sell your old upper without any problem. Not everyone is affected by the "chrome" spell. |

Thanks for the responses.
This seems to be a hot button topic. My only concern with the chrome-lined barrel is ease of cleaning and durability in the AR. As I said, I'm new to the AR, but I've been shooting for the vast majority of my 52 years. None of my other rifles, new or surplus, have chrome-lined barrels, and I've never had any problems. It just seems that chrome vs non-chrome is peculiar to the AR. So-called "chrome spell", "cool factor", or "tacticool" are of no concern to me. I couldn't give a rat's ass about that kind of superficial crap. Thanks again; I really appreciate the input. |
