| i am planning on getting an upper with a rifle length larue rail and flip up front and rear iron sights. its gonna have a 16in m4 profile barrel. would it be cheaper to build the upper by buying all the parts seperately or should i buy a complete m4 upper and change out the handguards and cut down the front sight? thanks for your replies. |

midway has A3 stripper uppers on sale for $90 upper kit $68 That just leaves the bolt, carrier barrel and gas block and tube, pins etc assuming you are buying a free float handguard. You might save a little depending on the brand. IMO you build if you enjoy it, or want components that are not available on an assembled upper. I am building an upper now, because, I wanted an ultra light 1:7 twist 16" with a slab side upper receiver and aluminum carrier. If I were to go Carbon fiber route, I think it would be cheaper to get an entire rifle from bushmaster. |
It depends on the prices you're able to find. Start looking at various vendors and settle on your parts list. Then it'll be an easier comparison. Which upper receiver? Which barrel? Which low-profile gas block? Which flash hider? Etc. Etc. Some vendors will assemble the parts for you at no or minimal cost. The benefit of building from parts is that you get to pick everything down to the last detail, but that normally means you'll pick expensive parts and end up spending more. You've already picked the Larue free float rails, so you don't want to go cheap on the other parts, right? |
