i am considering the purchase of a fixed power scope for the AR build, and I have a few questions.  fist is there any advantage of a 30mm tube vs a 1" tube?    the Build is going to be a .223 so i am considering a 6x scope.  from what i have been seeing online i can probably get a better quality scope in single power vs a variable power, any suggestions will greatly help.

I looked, I couldn't do it. An AR is supposed to be very versatile and a fixed power scope sort of kills that. Picking a variable is tougher to get just the right one but I think its well worth it.

What does your budget look like? What were you considering?

Edit- The biggest advantage of a 30mm tube is a larger adjustment range. With lower magnification scopes you will have more adjustment anyway.

For close range irons or an Aimpoint work fine.  For 100 to 300 yards look into the Weaver 6X, it's so much brighter than a Leupold 2x7.  I now have two Weavers (one on a Rem 700VS .223 and one on an A2 1/12 rifle, and the Leupold is back in the box.

Regarding versatility, who the hell only owns one rifle?!

It all depends upon what you want your rifle to do for you.

I have red dots on my home defense weapons..variable scopes on others as well as fixed scopes of 4X and 6X42
on other rifles...they all fill various needs...birds,squirrels,rabbits,ground hogs, skunks, coons, deer, coyotes as well as possums
and other varmints

A do it all scope for the AR is probably a high quality 1-4 or 1-6 or 1-7 or 1-8 and priced between $400 to $2500+

Another possibility would be to mount a fixed power and using an offset mount a red dot.

Price and overall wt are main considerations...if you are desiring of keeping your weapon light wt. & have budget concerns.

I have a 16" AR with a Burris 2-7.  It does everything I need it to do from short to mid range shooting.  Check out SWFA's deal on the Vortex Viper 2-7x32

I have one of those 2x7x32 vortex that SWFA has on closeout (it is 50% off so it is only $169).  It is a pretty damn good optic for the money.
