I'm looking to setup an ar that I can use for yotes but I would like to keep the barrel length in the 16" or 18" range. I know all the rifles I see out there have long barrels. What drawbacks are there in trying to use a shorter barrel.
Also I curently have a ubr thar I would like to use with it and I'm looking at scopes that would work with that set up. I'd like to keep the scope and mount price range as close to 1000 as I can. Looking at a mildot setup so far. Maybe illumination. Not looking to go beyond 14x on max range. I'm still open to suggestions on the scope. I was thinking of going with a stealth uppper so far. I appreciate an feed back G |

Need to know what your hunting conditions are before we can give you a truly appropriate answer.
I doubt that you or the coyote would notice any difference between the 16 & 18" barrels. You might look at the designed velocity range for your chosen bullets to see how that compares to the velocity of your bullet at the distance you want to shoot. Keep in mind that published data for factory ammo is derived usually derived from a 20-24" barrel. I hunt coyotes terrain that would allow shots from 10 yds to 5-600 yds but I have self-imposed a limit of 350 yd shots for now. With this parameter, I don't feel the least bit handicapped by my setup. I'm running a Bushy ORC with a YHM railed FF tube and a Leupold VX-II, 3-9x40 mounted in a LaRue LT-104 |

True I don't see much difference between 16" and 18" myself. Its keeping with that barrel length compared to the longer varmint setups is what I'm not sure of. I assume your bushy orc is 16". I'm glad to hear your happy with your setup. Same goes for the VX-II, 3-9x40 |
| Dude, if you cant get them closer than 300 yards, you have other issues to deal with. Some guys use only shotguns and kill alot, and I mean alot of coyotes. I use an AR with an 18" barrel and a 3-9x40 scope. I have to tell you though, I almost never take it off 4x power and thats usually just because I spot a deer and wanna count points or something. Every now and then I have a coyote hang up at three hundred yards but don't bother them unless they get into the 250 yard range, then I might make a pop shot for grins if im on a bipod, the wind is non existent, and they are sitting still. (that just happens to be my comfort level though, yours might be alot longer I dont know) My scope still stays on 4x though but as small as a coyote is, and with the short amount of time you have to shoot at them, a six hundred yard shot just educates them because they just dont connect very often. My coyote setup is a RRA 18" ss bbl Varmint A4. I have a Magpul ACS stock with two stage trigger and Leupold Mark AR scope on top. It's a tack driver. Apparently 16" barrels are quite a bit louder than their longer counterparts, so thats a drawback. You will lose some velocity with a shorter barrel, but you aint gonna notice, so it really don't matter. The stealth uppers are sweet and pretty light to boot.(unlike my paperweight) You will like them im sure. Throw on an illuminated Leupold1-5Xpower scope paired with a LaRue mount (probably under a grand) and I guarantee you will drop coyotes from 10 yards out to 250 yards all you want and consistently too if you can shoot. |

Ah Tex I think you may have misread what was said above. Nobody talking about taking shots beyond 300-350. But thanks for the rest of your info |
