go ahead and laugh but which way does a crush washer fit on a barrel before the flash hider.

Small end towards the barrel, large end towards the flash hider....

I just installed mine and put the small taper edge to the barrel. As a question, how tight should this be tightened as I assume I should use Loctite.

No Loctite...

Tight enough to properly index the flash hider...

What if when it stops, the FH still isn't inexed properly? Will the wsher flatten out enough to allow it ti be indexed?

On this general subject, are aluminum vise blocks really superior to blocks of wood in a really tight vise? I ask because  I crank my wood blocks around the barrel really tightly, and it still moves when crushing a crush washer. I'm guessing there's serious friction between the AL and the steel barrel. Does AL from the blocks deposit on the barrel? I assume you clamp the barrel under the handguards to avoid any marring being visible?

Thanks

Crush washers can be a pain in the ass. I use peel washers instead.

Fixed it for ya.

The trick on crush washers is to wrap leather around the front sight base and clamp that in the vise.
No barrel vise jaws needed.

I had a phantom 5C2 that woudl not time out rigth with a crush washer...it was way loose or about 3/4 around it would not really go any farther.  My local gunsmith turned a few thousanads off the back of the phantom on his lathe, blued it with some birchwood casey + propane torch (wecsog hot blueing ) and it timed out fine.

I'm going to have to search on your username to tag all these little pearls of wisdom.

Seriously, it's appreciated.

now, to hijack this thread... are crush washers reusable? for example, if i take off my A2 FH and install a phantom that i got from the EE (w/o its own washer), can i use that washer from the old A2, or will it have been flattened, and thus no good?

crush washers arent made to be reusable; h/w, i guess, you could in some cases if it tuned correctly w/ the new/re-installation, unless its way flattened

i'd just get another, new crush washer

also, peel washers can be a PITA...damn slices are SHARP as hell--one slipped out and cut my leg (scar is still there)

narrow end towards reciever, wide end towards muzzle device's base; in all reports, it doesnt really matter....

I reuse them all the time.  If they get too flat to index properly (top of FH on top), THEN you need to replace them.  They crush a lot before they get flat.  They don't crush at all if you don't have something to hold the barrel still.  I use a vise and leather (tip from Randall like above from back when I first got started w/ARs) or even two blocks of soft wood in a vise to hold the front sight base.  Then, the crush washers flatten out nicely and index the FH correctly with no lock-tite or anything like that needed.

I glued a strip of inner-tube in my aluminum vise blocks. The rubber grips the bbl. and helps keep it form turning.

Man I'm glad you asked that question.  I just got a phantom in the mail today and was looking at the washer thinking "Great, now what?!?!?"
