? - No insult implied, but how much experience do you have on a lathe?

Home ground HSS is good enough, but if you want carbide why not those cheap brazed bits on 3/8" steel?

As far as tool holders get, I dunno.  I think KDK is the best lathe tool system around, closely followed by the Aloris type.

my lathe work was in oilfield eqp, so a small thread fo me below 3" and that was mostly id. work. In the past I have used several brands of holders and inserts, I prefer to use inserts for accuracy and repeat performance, and grinding a first class cutter and keeping it sharp is a pain.

I would recommend a good carbide insert designed for threading.  I can't recommend any brands anymore, but I've found them to be far easier to use than grinding your own HSS cutters.

At least you are single-pointing your threads and not using a die... eek!

Kenametal, Iscar, Sandvik are all good threading inserts, check Ebay

I like the Top Notch style inserts.  They come full and partial profile.

THANKS! for the info, I did pick up the SECO KIT.
I have used SECO Carboly stuff in the past on (VTL Cartridge) various ops and it worked really well ! I'll try it on my ops.
