please tell me the benefits of a free float-vs-standard give me details I need them i'm frustraded and need explanations!horse.gif |
| Short answer. Free floated barrels have more consistent reactions to a bullet traveling down the bore. This translates to more accuracy. With no handguards being pushed against it or slings pulling on it the barrel vibrates the same every time and tends to be more accurate. The other reasons for the free float hand guards are more about the attachments that can be put on the rails most of the free floats offer. |

Long answer. Start cranking on a your sling for support with an un-floated barrel and the point-of-impact for that rifle will change. Since it's nigh impossible to pull on it the exact same way every time you need to separate the barrel from the handguards. The forces that push that hot gas and bullet down the barrel make a whipping effect when it's fired. The barrel wants to whip a certain way every time it's fired... when you start man-handling the front of your weapon that whip is changed in a small way, it's interrupted. That small change will shift the point-of-impact for your weapon in an unpredicted way. Free-floating the barrel simply means that you're isolating the barrel from the front handguards. They're not connected anymore, the barrel "floats" inside the handguards/rail system. The barrel and handguard have been divorced, they don't talk, don't see each other anymore... no visitation, not even an odd grudge-fuck now and then. Fucking with one no longer means anything to the other. Viola, you can jam on that sling for all it's worth for support now and it's not going to shift your point-of-impact. By removing as many variables as you can, you have a more consistent shooting operation. |

While it all makes total sense, what practical real world effect does a Free Float rail have? Are we talking going from 2moa to 1moa? 1.5moa to 1.45moa? Are the effects very noticeable to all shooters, or only noticeable to that top 10% of shooters out there who's limitation is their setup? |
You could easily get a 1.5MOA vertical string. Its still combat accurate by all means, but when you get out to 300-600 yards, it can really start to add up. |

but remember this, if you are not really using a sling to stability, just using it to carry your gun, you will not see much difference then. I have seen plenty of people who have slings on there guns that do not "use" them during shooting. or if you do not even have a sling, then there will not be much difference. |
