I agree. The reusable silica gel type only last a fraction of the time the other stuff does. Plus drying it out takes hours in the oven.

I usually go to the pharmacy (sometimes the one in Walmart when I'm buying ammo).....if the pharmacist is nice, they'll let you have the dessicant they throw out. On a good day you can score alot. I get the plastic canister and packet types. Throw a few in each ammo can and you're good to go

How can you tell if the desiccant from the pharmacy or any other used desiccant is still effective? After it has been exposed to the atmosphere for God knows how long who knows how effective it will be? About the cat litter. When I did and someone opens my ammo cans to check the stash they will find good commercial desiccant protecting the ammo. Not something used for kitty shitty.

Much of the pharmacy stuff is very new production and indicating. You can see right away (by holding up to the light) if the packets/canisters have absorbed any moisture and changed color. 95% of the packets I've gotten haven't lost their absorbant qualities. It's free....which is just the right price for me

Sorry to hijack your thread but feel free to send me an IM with an answer as not to further hijack, I'm just curious if I'm missing something that I should be doing different. Thanks, And, my reason for tagging this thread is because I'm in the same boat, I want to get some desiccant for my ammo cans and ammo but have been blowing it off as I feel my basement is cool and dry as in 50-60% humidity which I wish I could get a definitive answer as to what percentage it should be at... |

Alright, cool. Most of my ammo is on shelves in their original packaging and I like it this way but have been adding some to .50 cal cans here and there. Because of this I bought a humidity meter and have been keeping an eye on it just to get an idea as to where things are at down there. I've been contemplating picking up a humidifier as well just to be on the safe side but would like to know for sure if 50-60% would require a humidifier for my un-canned ammo, it would probably be worth it regardless I guess.

How does this product break down, to cost per can? |
A box of 200 1 oz. DRIERITE desiccant bags runs about $30.00 plus shipping. This should be more than anyone needs for their ammo cans. I should still have a pretty good sized box here somewhere. |
