Whats better? Chrome moly or stainless steel?

Stay after class and write "The search engine is my friend" 100 times on the chalkboard.

How about you meet me in the school yard after class, smartass!  Also if you don't know the answer, don't reply.

Depends on your application.  SS is better for Competitive shooting and those obsessed with accuracy.  Chrome-Moly especially if its chrome lined is much better for full-auto and chrome lining also makes cleaning and maintenance a breeze.

thank you. See everybody loves a good, straight answer instead of a smartass remark.

SS has not been proven to be more accurate that CM barrels. .50 barrels are almost ALWAYS CM as they have a higher tensile rating and handle heat better. I had some PAC-NOR CM SPR barrels made and believe that they will shoot just as good (if not better than SS barrels)....

It would be just as courteous to everybody else here to do a search on your question prior to posting it as it is for others to answer it.

I was constrained for time and couldn't get much deeper into the "why's".  I should have stated the reason SS is better for Competition is that it tends not to wear out as quick as a CM barrel.  Plus the fact 416 SS is easier to machine.  CM like you said is far superior in the tensile strength and heat department's, that is why is far superior for use in machine guns and larger cartridges like the .50 BMG.

I wish I could did it out but Precision Shooting some years ago did a test between the two steels with bore scope shots of the throat to illustrate the difference in wear.  It also has been demonstrated in Benchrest that a properly chambered barrel in CM can shoot just as good as a SS barrel.

In 223ordy's defense, if you have the free membership, the search only goes back 30 days. Sometimes there isn't a lot of info in that short amount of time...but sometimes there is.

I always buy stainless when I can.  With stainless I do not worry about corrosion.  With chrome-moly, I do.

Heck, I am right now cleaning and re-oiling the bores on three M1 Garands that have been sitting around for about a year.

I have a stainless barreled 40-X which hasn't been used in years.  I don't even think, much less worry, about its bore.

That's my take on it.

Chrome lined is superior for full auto?  I'll have to take your word for it.

+1

No offense....but I entered "barrel" in the good ol search engine and got 4 pages reguarding the topic. Maybe you could do that next time instead of trying to chew ass...........

Chrome lined offers better corrosion resistance than stainless.  You still have to keep the outside of it oiled though.

The only really benefit SS has is corrosion resistance. In every other respect, though, it is an inferior metal. SS is not more resistant to wear but rather the opposite. All things being equal, the Chrome-moly barrel should out last the SS.

Roger on the corrosion issue. They will be KG coated on the out side to help with this. When SS barrels get VERY hot (mag dumps, etc) they barrels will start to warp (affecting accuracy negatively).
