I want to dimple my melonite barrels for a low pro  gasblock.  was told I would have to use a carbide bit  what says the hive?

Use a clamp-on low pro gas block. Holds stronger and wont have to mess with the barrel.

already have the low pros and I need the clearance from a set screw

A nice new masonry bit and lots of oil/cutting lube.  I've done it quite a bit on flame hardened punch press dies to get through the hardened surface layer.  You will need to make a good mark with a punch though just to make sure it doesn't move.  You may want to start with a small bit, it will keep center better.

you can use a diamond  chip coated burr to get thru the mlanite, then whatever.
