my friend and I went shooting today, he had his AR15 ( Bushmaster M4 style ) and i had my M1A, i was standing behind him waiting for him to finish,

he fires...

POP POP...

gives me a weird look- i go "you just had a double tap"

he pulled the trigger once, and it popped 2 shots off rapid fire...

he RECENTLY dissasembled his bolt / carrier recently to clean it...

is it possible he didnt put it back together properly?  ive heard about peoples ARs double / tripple tapping...

and how important is it to dissasemble the bolt / carrier to scrub it out ? never done that to my AR's

I've heard of reloaded ammo doing this... maybe not on an AR but what happens, is the load is underpowered, and the bolt doesn't go all the way back till it catches... comes forward again and fires twice.

I've fired many rounds in AR's and never had that happened before. Switch ammo....certainly would scare the heck out of you!

i watched the two casings land on my bench and my first thought was "COOL!"

he felt the same way.

good thing one of them wasnt a "squib" that lodged in the barrel....

I hope your kidding.   If not... HOLY CRAP MAN!!  The bolt group needs to be cleaned!  I would clean the bolt group rather than anything else if I had a choice.

Sounds more like a fire control problem.  I have also seen guys inadvertently pull the trigger twice through a combination of how the grip the pistol grip and hold the rifle.  The times I have seen the inadvertent double It normally pissed the shooter off because the second round didn't count on the rifle range for qualification.

Check the condition of the disconnect engagement suface. A buddies AR started double tapping. Did it several times then went FA. Opened it up and the disconnect had chipped out enough to let the hammer follow the carrier until he let off the trigger.

i got my first AR when i was 18. being young and learning about AR's on my own and by range time, i was afraid to take the bolt apart. id usually spray them out with cleaner, let them drain, and then dry before i put some oil on them and put them back. i always whiped the outside clean but as i said i never dissasembled them. my first AR is 5 years old now, a 20" Colt Match HBAR and.... thousands of rounds down the tube... NEVER a FTF or jam.  so i never felt the need to dissasemble it until he told me how much crap his has built up into it.

is it possible to screw up putting them back together? how tight do the allen screws need to be tightened?

thanks

is the disconnect the part on the trigger group that holds it in place, so you have to release the trigger before the hammer can drop again ? ( i know Ruger Mini14s have such a deal, not sure about the ARs ) on the Rugers its just a simple hook / latch...

i feel like a nooby tonight with all these questions

The only thing you need to dissassemble/reassemble your bolt carrier group for cleaning is a loose round. No allen wrench required, those screws are staked in and don't come out.

What ammo? What is the firing pin?
7/9/2006 8:00:18 PM EDT

i think it was Black Hills Reloads, thats usually what we buy, and it was the factory firing pin.

so the side ways cotter pin in the bolt carrier that has a little eye-let on the end of it... i pulled that out which released the fireing pin, and the other front part...

cleaned it up, put it back together, the retaining pin didnt go through very easy. had to tweak it very slightly to get it through, now it seems loose, but not enough to just fall out. it certainly isnt as hard to push out now, as it was the first time. should this be a concern ? or once its in the rifle, it should stay in place fine, right?

thanks again

If it is doubling check the disconnector.  Use the -23 download for your FCG checks.  Also see if there is a primer or other foreign matter in the disco somewhere.  Check to see if the disco spring is upside down or otherwise non-functional.
If he removed the gas key he needs to make sure it is installed properly, torqued, and properly staked.  That shouldn't have any bearing on the doublign, but could lead to problems of another sort down the road.

unintentional bumping,

my jewell trigger occassionally doubles when I'm concentrating on long distance shooting.

I have seen this before, but it also did more then just a double tap, like 3 or 4 round burst. Its kinda scary when you dont expect it (or can control it)

change the disconnector.  had same problem

its not a double tap, its "controlled pairs"

Read one of AR-15/M-16 manuals on this site. It detailed description of cleaning and disassembly.
