I have a SEI vortex without a hole drilled in it.  I need to pin it on a barrel.  It is hardened steel and I can not drill it with my normal drill bits.  Any input on how to drill it or should I just sell it and get a Vortex with the hole in it already?  Thanks in advance.

No such creature as a Vortex w/ the hole already in it.

Drill press and high-carbon steel drill bit works for most folks.

I drilled mine with a standard drill bit and no problems.  Are you using drill wax or some other type of cutting lube, is your bit sharp? try to keep the drill speed 3-500 rpm to keep from over heating the bit. HTH

Wat?

The Vortex is made from 8620 alloy steel 35-38 on the Rockwell C scale. Tough stuff. You might be able to cut it with a cobalt bit. I don't know. I'll ask around the shop.

Why not? They are notoriously hard to drill so it only makes sense that Smith would do this for people wanting to install them on 14.5" barrels.

Sorry never had any issues drilling the ones on my M4s, yes they are hard, but then having the proper tools always makes things easier. (drill press and quality selection of bits)

Plus most folks wanting an M4 w/ perm FS buy them that way don't they??

(thought I was the only guy that preferred doing this type work myself)

ps - as all but the last two of my Vortex FS were bought from SEI and I never saw that as option sold there I suspect, as noted above, it's relatively new product
