i am doing my first modification to an upper for a friend (guinea pig) of mine.  i have all the tools (i think) - thanks Calvin - but haven't even gotten into them yet.

i bought a stag upper - thanks pete - with the railed gas block so it would be easier to remove it - allen wrench or a punch .  anyway, i took the screws out but the gas tube is still stuck in it.  also, the gas block will not fit over the flash hider... so, my questions are:

1.  how do i get the gas tube out?
2.  how do i get the gas block off the barrel?
2a.  if i have to take the flash hider off, is it just screwed on there?

thanks for the help.

if you are removing the entire gas block, there is no need to remove the gas tube, you can leave it in place.

unless your barrel is under 14.5", the flash hider will just be screwed on, make sure you have another crush/peel washer to reindex the flash hider when you put it all back together.

once the flash hider is removed the gas block should slide right off, if it doesn't then remove the gas tube by tapping out the roll pin and pulling it out. this will allow you to twist the gas block and loosen it up, or tap the rear of the gas block with a leather mallet.

-Your gas tube is held into your gas block via a small roll pin. You must remove the roll pin to get the gas tube out of the gas block.

-Your flash hider will unscrew (ccw) unless it is pinned.

Hope that helps.

okay, that seems pretty easy.  thanks for the help.

...except for the crush/peel washer - what is that?  i haven't seen anything on reindexing the flash hider.  does anyone have instructions on that?  where do i get a crush/peel washer?

thanks

any dealer will have them... the washer goes between the barrel and the flash hider...

a crush washer is "crushed" until the hider is indexed (meaning the A2 flat side is at the bottom)

a peel washer is comprised of multiple thin metal washers that are adhered together, you "peel" them layer by layer (using an xacto or equivalent) until the hider can be properly indexed.
