I have a 512 rev. F.

I have never had to turn it anywhere near the highest setting to see it on a bright sunny day at noon.

IIRC the default setting (12, whatever it is when you turn it on) is plenty bright outside on a sunny day.

The highest setting is absurdly bright, I can only imagine it's for shooting at the sun.

Doesn't sound right. Hell the brightest setting would probably bloom while looking directly at the sun.
Disclaimer: Do not look directly at the sun .

Update.... inside i take it to the brightest setting and its bright
I am able to go down 14 clicks till i cant see it...
outside the brightest is about the same as 7 clicks down inside

Saw somewhere that leaving the batteries out over night can do a "reset"
Will try that and contact them in the am

Its a 556 nv model btw

I have to crank mine up about 4 or 5 settings from the on position in the bright sunlight, but it gets plenty bright enough to see.
