I'm a noob to optics..always just used iron sights.  neways i justt ordered a eotech xps 2-0, i have a yhm flat top upper with yhm flip up BUIS... it has a mountable rail on top.. Now my question is what is the reasoning for mounts..Is it to raise the optics? make it easier to take off? do i need a mount?

sorry if my question is stupid but never had optics

The mounts are for A) to have quick release/return to zero capabilities and B) provide a lower 1/3 cowitness between the optics and the irons. Some models have the 7mm raised base to provide lower 1/3 without other mounts but the model you are getting does not. It will have an absolute cowitness. You do know what cowitness means right?

ETA: No your dont need a mount. You can take it out of the box, slap it on and start shooting. If you decide you want a QD option or you want a lower cowitness then you do need a mount.
