Went to an advanced tac carbine class over the weekend. Many drills required multiple, timed, double taps etc... Noticed, actually for the first time, that the trigger on my Colt AR15 carbine will not allow a very fast second shot and that in the heat of the moment, I sometimes fail to release trigger all the way forward, causing the weapon to fail to fire the second shot. Although I am not an armorer, my memory tells me this would be because the trigger release or "deselctor" (I think) will not allow the tigger to make contact with the sear until the trigger is released all the way forward. My question is this: is there an aftermarket part or simple armory proceedure that would allow the trigger to go back to firing position quicker and without the need for the trigger to be released all the way forward. If there is, I am sure it would make the second shot much quicker. Any part or fix would of course need to be 100% safe and not screw with the SAO or cause doubling/misfires. Any help here would be appreciated. |
| A 2-stage trigger might work for you, but first and foremost this is a shooter problem not a gun problem. A lot more trigger time in high-speed/high-stress situations will help. Try shooting IPSC pistol or 3-gun competitions regularly... it will cure this problem REAL QUICK ! |

Thanks, gentlemen. I agree short stroke is the physical problem, just seems like the stroke shouldn't have to be so darn long. While I have some experience in high stress sits with other weapons, including some competition, I have never tried the competitive route with a long gun. Probably a good idea, thanks again. |
this is the right thing to do, 3 guns, quick fix |

Three gun rifle, verses a service (duty) rifle is worlds apart. If the plan is to use the rifle in the real world, then leave the FCG alone. If the game plan is to turn the rifle into a 3 gun (race) rifle, then you can take a lot of the over travel out of the FCG by setting the sears by hand (stoning), and installing take up and over travel set screws. This takes the amount of movement that the trigger needs to be pulled to fire, then released to reset dam near in half. Think of it as the difference between a tune 70 series verses a stock 80 series colt 45 pistols. Also, Even with a two stage, you still have creep until you hit the second stage. Now the bad new, it takes a real talent to perform the modification, so don't even both to ask me to walk you threw it. And, like any other race gun option, it will wear out quickly, so it will require a smith to reset it after as little as 1000 rounds if the FCG is set up very tight will no extra creep. To sum it up, unless you married a Prom Queen and am used to dealing with high maintenance items in your life, leave the FCG alone and learn to fully release the trigger before you go for the next trigger pull. And, if you really need to double tap very, very fast, then it's machine gun time and you just need to learn how to pull off a two round burst. P.S. Welcome to the site!! |

Thanks, Dano. Yes, in fact I did marry a prom queen and I am surely not looking for another. I am a KISS fanatic when it comes to weapons. Not looking for a race gun either. This stuff is not that much of a "game" to me and then there are liability issues.... Also, believe it our not, I have a good deal more than "a couple hundred rounds" through AR15 type platforms, probably thousands more than those who have made this suggestion to me. I agree that auto or burst fire would be best but I can't privately own such platforms. Very fast double taps with an AR15 SAO platform is simply something I have never been trained at before and hence the problem. I am sure that more training will help, it just seems that there shouldn't have to be so much travel to reset the trigger. Does anyone have a recommendation on the best gunsmiths to send out the rifle? |
