Hello all,

Long-time firearm owner, but first time AR owner!  I just bought a Delaware lower, and DPMS parts kit.  I decided to build and AR because i wanted a fun .22LR plinker.  After looking at the Walther p22, and then some of these new S&W 15-22 and GSG-5, I decided to just get an AR lower and buy a .22 upper or conversion.  With this, I will have my .22 plinker and a more purposeful AR for any future desires!

What do I need to know in deciding on a .22LR upper, or drop-in kit?  What are the advantages of each?  And, I don't want to cause any fights, but... piston or no piston?

A drop in kit of course will give you the opportunity to shoot .223/5.56 which is a big plus. While a dedicated .22 upper will be more accurate and more reliable, but loose the ability to shoot .223/5.56.

Thanks! I have been leaning that way. I just bought a 20" complete upper, in 5.56.
Who makes good 5.56 mags, and which should I stay away from? Who makes good 22LR drop-in kits, and which should I stay away from?

I love my Magpul Pmags for my AR and the best drop in kits are either the CMMG or Spike's.  I have had both and they work great with Black Dog Machine magazines.

Like the Previous poster Spikes or CMMG is the way to go as far as drop ins. As for mags for .22  Black Dog Machine magazines seem to be the way to go. For 5.56 Pmag can't be beat, I have around 70 of them and they have all gone through hard use. They just work, however for the type of shooting you are doing some standard Aluminum GI mags would work just fine and they can be found for less then $10 bucks.
