I have a question on my most recent build (Project "parts hanger" aka use all my decent spares and put them all together and have a "free" rifle.) I'm using a 12" YHM rail mated to a Sun Devil billet upper. When tightening the rail, the upper rails just started to kiss the when I had another ~5° left to turn it. It was very tight (but only with bare hands and a good grip) and the anti-rotation screws lined up, everything looks great (esp for a parts I had laying around build!) It's intended purpose is just a fun gun, but the more accurate the better.

I *think* it's a non issue because it's a free float and the bbl has it's freedom to whip and should usually reset to a familiar spot after each shot, but what I'm less sure of is the relation between those 2 top rails and their relation to accuracy. My gut feeling is it should be fine, but I don't know every one of the tricks to wringing out every bit of accuracy either. Should I take it apart and file of a few thou? I'll usually put something together and see how it runs 1st (if it aint broke, don't fix it type) but if there being tension on the upper rail between the upper and the FF is a basic no no, now is the time to tinker with it.

Here's a couple pics even though it's not my proudest accomplishment or anything, for what it is, it's coming out pretty decent.

Thanks in advance for any input, reasoning, exp etc

Nice parts just to have laying around. But I guess they aren't just laying around anymore...

I'm "fortunate" (read broke lol) I was gonna build something pretty similar to this, but went hog hunting once, so that project morphed into a cool .458Socom, so that gave free'd up some parts, then Rainier Arms had a few screaming deals, that made me even more broke, ummm I mean got me even more "spares". It's a hodgepodge for sure, but I think a decent looking albeit heavy one.

I wanna make the best of it. I'm gonna do some reading about "accurizing", but I wanted to get some insight about this top rail having tension on it, the more I think about it, the less I know. 1st thought is that I want all the pressure evenly distributed, which it is from the upper to the bbl which is where the accuracy would be related, the only tension is from the free float tube to the upper. I'm thinking it's just a hand guard and isn't touching the bbl it shouldn't matter, but at the same time, I know most of the accuracy in the AR is all in the upper receiver assembly. I only know the basics, I don't know the "art/science" of it yet, hoping to get into that now.
