It is my intention to put a free float tube on my AR I recently read two articles that suggested you could damage the threaded area in the front of the upper, I believe they called it a tenon. Is this a common problem or does this only happen under extreme conditions?

I can't answer about the threaded type, but my Daniel Defense Omega 7 does not use the threads. It is a 2 piece free float. I don't think it will be a problem.  This may be an option for you. The DD Omega is best purchase i have made for my AR.
