i have seen m16's with round front sight posts, but seems the newer rifles all have square cut front sight posts why is that?

The round posts have 5 positions for the detent.
The square has 4 positions.
The Army might have changed to the square post because it might be a little stronger due to it having a thicker post?

A square post will give cleaner sight picture.  A round post is some what finer in elevation adj. Thinner as well I think.
Change came about with the A2, if I remember right.  For a while we saw mixed parts on M16"s

I believe this is correct. The square shape is easier for the eyes to get a crisp image of versus the round post, which is easier to "blur"  and loose definition.
