Total newbie here. I'd like (I think) to remove the front sight on my Olympia AR. The handle is removable and I'd like to put a red dot sight on it. If I put it on top of the handle, I think it will be too high. The local shop wants $80 to replace the front sight with a low-profile gas block. Is this a reasonable cost? Is it something I could do myself? ANY thoughts, suggestions, welcome. The biggest thing bothering me about this whole idea would be no BUIS.
thanks! capvan |

is that just labor?? or us the low-pro block included in the cost?
If low-pro is included, do it. if not, buy a punch set, drift the pins out, drift out the roll pin that holds the gas tube, and reverse the process into the low-pro block. I reccomend one that is held on by set screws. Or, you can dremel off the FSB and repaint it. Welcome to ARFCOM. I see this is post numero uno. |

I had a A2 front sight with a red dot. It doesnt really bother aiming. A lot of trainers will tell you, keep iron sights flipped up all the time even while using a red dot. I thought the same thing as you when i bought my AR. 7 months later and the A2 has not moved. The red dot is gone and i use irons now. Many AR owners with red dots and BUIS like the BUIS to cowitness in the bottom third of their optic. It may take a small riser under the red dot to accomplish this. This is the set up i used. The red dot was just above my BUIS. I will probably get another red dot, but i want tos save up and get a good one. Until then, iron sights are just fine.
+1 for shooting a few hundred rounds thru it before making any mods or buying optics. Try to shoot other guns with different optics. |
