i bought a yhm free float carbine forearm for my stag ar. i also purchased an ar tool for disassembly/reassembly.

i removed the flash hider, gas block, gas tube and stock 2 piece forearm. im attempting to remove the barrel nut and its either on really tight, or im really weak. im assuming is regular left to loosen threads...right? i didnt buy a receiver block so its not in a vise. i just had a buddy hold the upper while i tried to use the tool to twist it off. do i absolutely need the receiver block so i can clamp it in a vise?

any suggestions would be appreciated. i want to do it right, but i dont want to spend more on tools unless its absolutely necessary. thanks!

yes you ABSOLUTELY have to get an upper receiver block...

Exercise your brain muscle and get an action block.

Cheap and reusable.

Before I had an action block I got pretty good using a towel wrapped around the upper while stile attached to the lower holding the whole deal with my socked foot on a carpeted floor and tapping the barrel nut off with a mallet. It works but like everybody else said get an action block because you will use it again I promise. Also, when re-tightening the barrel nut you can induce excessive windage problems by forcing the index pin hard against the upper receiver to the left if not properly supported.

Good luck with your project
