I just recently purchased me a RRA Optics ready AR. I really do not have the money right now to un-ass on a Eotech or anything like that, So, for the time being I guess I am going to go with some type of Iron sight. From here Im lost....any help would be really appreciated...
here is my new toy http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e392/Had20z/DSC01634.jpg Mike |
| lol this site makes me wanna get a new ar. i have a 14.5 (16 with muzzle break) and i went with the bushnell holosight+magnifier route. i had a orc version but ill have my troy buis in prob by friday. i should be happy but looking at everyones different guns and ideas makes me want more lol. now i wanna get a 20" ar and make it geared for long distance. Im thinking this time ill actually build it myself. im usually pretty good with not knowing anything about something and building it myself by reading how to online. Ill mess things up plenty of times and prob break and have to replace a few parts, but in my opinion thats the best way to learn something. When i was younger i built my first computer and things kept going wrong, and im happy they did. every time something went wrong i would have to figure out all the different things that could cause that problem and troubleshoot. by the time i was done and it was finally working perfect i knew everything i needed to know. hopefully i can get the same type of experience building my next ar. wow by the time i finished this paragraph i already decided that im def guna build a new one soon. my bank account is guna kick my ass |

I suggest Magpul's MBUS. They're around $40 for the front sight, 20ish for the rear and they're good quality sights. http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/botach_2083_536212382 +1 I have the Matech BUIS (current military issue), and they can be had for real cheap if you want an all-metal BUIS. IMO though, weight should always be one of the most important considerations so I'd go for the Magpul (which will be lighter than the Matech). And just an FYI, you don't need to drop 500+ to get a good, usable optic for your carbine. A Vortex Strikefire red dot can be had for around 130$ and comes set up for co-witness and everything. You could also check out a Bushnell Trophy 1x25 (but you'd have to invest in a riser for proper co-witness I think). There are others out there if you look. I have an Eotech now but I went for a long time with quality budget optics like the Strikefire on my AR and was just fine. Now sure, I didn't do any diving with it, nor did I run it over with any tanks, but I haven't babied it either. Now once you get below the 100$ mark, things become really questionable...because usually they have words like "NcStar" written on the side...

Since you already have a standard FSB (front sight block) you will only need to buy a rear sight. I would suggest you get a nice one. I use the Troy folding battle sights (3 complete sets). They are awesome and you can continue to use it later as a BUIS (back up iron sight) later on when you get an optic. The Troy rear sight lists for around $125 but you can get them quite regularly for about $100 - $110 on ebay with free shipping. I don't think you can go wrong with Troy. Here is a set of Troy Folding Battle sights on my AR pistol. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/yfz450air/IMG_1677.jpg I agree, Troy's are pretty awesome, but I've just never been able to justify spending 100+ dollars on an extremely simple mechanical device the size of a match-box. I know "niche" items are generally going to be more expensive, but this is a little overboard I think. But hey, whatever floats your boat. I like the Troy, but my suggestion: go with a solid BUIS that's affordable (Matech, Magpul, or something comparable) and spend the rest of the money on good mags or ammo...or a good budget optic. |
| IIRC the optics ready have a railed gas block but since you have a fsb that's one less thing to buy. Magpul rear flip up is about $55.00 and depending on your budget check out the Primary Arms "M3" for ~ $80.00. Good budget optic, bright enough for outdoor use on sunny days, good reveiws here, no problems w/ mine. The magpul only comes w/ the small peep but can easily be drilled out if you like. |
