just built a Ar Black rain build 223. with a 24 in stainless 1/8 twist barrel, need some scope ideas for plinking at paper and things out to 500 yds. for a good price, around 100 to 150 dollors. dont have to be a top end scope, just something with good vision, with good zoom for my old tired eyes.

Vortex 6-24x50. It's on back order, but for $100, it's a good deal. http://swfa.com/Vortex-6-24x50-Crossfire-Rifle-Scope-P43585.aspx |

For that price range I would recommend the Bushnell 10x they are $189. We have them in stock but they are not listed on the website yet.

Nikon in my opion gets over looked alot. I bought the Nikon Buckmaster 6x18-40, with mil-dot and side focus for $309 plus shipping on sale. But the buckmaster line is very reasonable in price and you get decent glass. For $200 you won't be disappointed. Start at this link
You can wait for the sales like I did but definitly check out the Buckmaster line. |

| it is the ultimate folly to spend big bucks on a rifle then cheap out on sighting equipment. Saving and getting good glass is worth it. if you want to go to 500 yards with solid repeatable adjustments the lowest I would go is double your budget. A used basic leupold would probably do well. Look for used good condition target turret models |

If you could save for more don't cheap out on glass. ETA- Burris is also a nice optic in the mid-range. |

Leupold VX-II 3-9X40. Made in USA. Lifetime warranty. Even to purchasers of used scopes. I have found 2 of these scopes in the last month for 200 dollars. Both gloss finish but that doesn't bother me. Mounted one on a Stevens 200 in 25/06 and am mounting another on a Stag Arms Model 1 with a Larue LT-104.
This scope is really common among deer hunters in my neck of the woods. They have a reputation for being tough and reliable. One of my coworkers is the hardest hunting person I know. He has one mounted on a Ruger .270. This gun is out in all weather conditions year round. Holds zero and kills a truckload of game each year. Burris is good. Support America. |
