i need some help here, money is burning a hole in my pocket. I already have a M&P 15X, love it, have it outfitted just right. I want to take the next step and build something on an ar platform, problem is I really am not a fan of the 556. So what is a boy to do, 6.8, 308, 338?????? looking to build something with a bit of a punch. Also I know that the 338 or 308 would make a deccent sniper platform, and I am leaning more that direction. So the question is, how does the 6.8 compare to the other two calibers when it comes to the longer ranges (nothing exotic 2-300 yards max). Also if I do build on one of these calibers, who is the best to go with?????
thanks in advance. |

The 6.8 is fine for 300 yards but the 308 is much better. The 6.8 is cheaper to build than the 308 or other variant. I would look into the ballistics you need and figure in the cost and then go from there. 300 yards is not "sniper type" shooting. But if you want punch the 308 has it all over the 6.8. If you are hunting with it I would choose 308. The weight of the 308 rifle is more than the standard AR15 so figure that in also.
These are just a few factors to consider. AL |

I have a 6.8x43,great to hunt with, very accurate. Never had any problems dropping a Buck in its tracks. But if you punching power, accuracy, long range go with the .338 fed. I belive the only difference between the .308 and the .338 is the barrel everything else is the same. But someone will correct me if I am wrong

Besides 6.8 and 308 I'd add 6.5 but only if you handload.Forget the 338 unless it's for hunting, not necessary to endure the added recoil and blast for just targets/plinking.That larger caliber makes little sense unless you use a longer case for added range ( think 338 lapua).
Just my opinions though.... |
