hey guys, i recently put a double star lower below my stag arms m4 upper. i went out to the range the other day and noticed when i went to load the first round it got stopped when it was going up the m4 feed ramps. i just pushed the forward assist and all was good. i noticed it happens every now and again and sometimes if there is a round in the chamber and  you pull on the charge handle it feels stuck. you have to pull a little harder and it will pop loose and eject the cartridge.

i loaded a mag and loaded a cartridge in the chamber. i pulled back on the charge handle and cycled some ammo through it. if you racked it the ammo would load fine. once in a while the cartridge would get "stuck" and you would have to pull harder on the charge handle to eject it.

any ideas?

oh forgot to mention that the ammo that i ran through it also had slight marr marks caused from the feed ramps.

Are you really pulling the handle HARD and letting it fly? If your just pulling easy and letting go that won't get it done. If thats not the problem maybe it's a weak buffer spring.

Weak buffer spring combined with strong magazine spring.  First round will be difficult to strip from mag.

buffer spring is only few hundred rounds old.

yeah if i pull it hard and let it fly it will load fine. if i pull it slow and let go it will sometimes hang.

Needs more break in?  How many rounds through the upper and lower?  Is the BCG and upper lubed well?  Sounds *normal* for a new upper and BCG especially if it's not lubed up.

upper has about 500 or so rounds through it. i make sure everything is well lubed so thats not a problem.

why would the bullets be getting marred when the load?

You never baby the pull and let go of the charging handle. It's a military type rifle.

i know i know...
but why would it marr the bullets? that cant be normal?

You do realize that the soft copper/brass of the ammo does have to drag against the much harder steel barrel extension with considerable force right?

That's why people don't recommend cycling the same rounds over and over.

yeah i understand that but i guess ive never cycled ammo like that so ive never seen the marring. as long as its "normal" then im good to go

You are containing a violent explosion and slamming dissimilar metals into each other...stuff gets buggered up.

Check to ensure that the feed ramps of the barrel extension are aligned with the feedramps in the upper (assuming it has the M4 ramps).  Sometimes they are not aligned exactly.  Also, see what the finish of the ramps are.  I've seem some that weren't finished that well.  The marring doesn't really matter unless it is serious.  Then it could affect accuracy.

Could it be a headspace problem?Had issues with a DPMS upper and it ended up being out of spec.

humm i dont know exactly what that should look like but i do know it has the M4 feed ramps. they look to be in the correct position and i can see where the bullets are riding up them. the bullets seem to be getting the marring from the sharp side of one of the feed ramps. the marring isnt severe but noticeable.

It never hurts to have head space gage I keep a field grade Foster in my bag just in case it's ever needed. But I really don't think it's a headspace problem. Military  Auto. rifles are designed to be loaded and fired. I don't remember reading or being told to chamber a round and then eject the unfired round.

But even if you did find the brass with small markings I don't think it would keep the round from firing and being ejected.

so should i get the headspace checked? i find it hard to believe thats it. the upper is fairly new
