I am building my first AR15.  I don't want anything too fancy yet, but optics are desirable.  Holographic sights seem more appealing to me vs. red dot although I'm not completely aware of the pros and cons of either.  What do you folks recommend?  What can I get that is reasonable for around $150 with the mounting hardware?  Is this possible?

For that price, you can get the SPOT red dot sight.  But if you want a good EOtech or Aimpoint, it will cost $350+.  If you are using your AR for LE or Military purposes, I'd purchase the EOtech or Aimpoint, but if it is just for fun, then get the SPOT and see how you like it.

not for LE or Military purposes, just for fun.  I think I may save my pennies and go for an EOtech.

If you don't need magnification, the EOtech and Aimpoints are the way to go.

Yup.

Eventually, you'll get both if you hang out here long enough....I did

I bought the EOTech first and it's still my favorite.

$150 is pretty much not going to happen even on a very well used one.  You can get a used one for $250.  I personally went with the Aimpoint over the EOtech mostly because the EOTECH was so new at the time and I didn't care for the 65moa ring.  I prefer the 4moa dot of the aimpoint.  If you can't try them both out first then just go with what your gut tells you is better

good luck

I think you will like your EOTech very much. I have 2 of them and they are very sweet, and they (551 & 552 rev F) are both worth every penny as far as I am concerned.
