i am currently shooting a bushy m4a3 with a 14.5" barrell (flash welded on) and it works great for plugging things out to around 300m, after that seems like i might as well throw rocks.  my question is this:  should i get a 24" nmhb from bushmaster or look into the full floaters?  is there that much of a difference in performance between the two?  or should i just sell the ar and put a down payment on a national match m14.  im not real impressed with the .223 caliber.  i want knockdown power at 500m+ with accuracy in a semi-automatic rifle.  am i dreaming?

You're not dreaming, you just need to move up in caliber.

Check out the Variants forum and see if you like the idea of a whole new AR in .308 or if you'd prefer something like the 6.5 Grendel that would work on your existing lower.

I have my ARs for "plinking" out to 300yrds after that i might grab an M1 or 03 but i much rather shoot my 243s. They have a flat trajectory even when compared to a 308. I was really considering going to a PSS 308 but when my fav mil spec ammo went to $115 a battle pack,  I think I will stick to my 243s, and have went back to a childhood friend the 22lr I have found that being proficient with a gun does not require multiple hours at the range every month but is a carry over from being a cool collected shooter. To be a great shoot with a gun however requires this extra investment in time and money.

im not saying im not proficient with this gun.  inside of 300m im a killer with it.  i know about the grendel and the the spc even the 77 grain hpbt. i guess what im trying to say is should i even bother trying to add a heavy match barrel to reach distances 500+ or just keep the ar for shorter ranges and pick up a m14.  (god they are high dollar.)

You should stick with your Bushy a little longer.  I'm assuming that you have a 1/9 twist barrel?  What type of targets/size are you plan on shooting at 500yd/m?  You didn't specify what ammo your shooting.  Irons or optics?  Try some 75/77 gr BTHP at 500.  I shot my issue M4A1 out to 500yds during the All Army Matches at Benning in 05 and held my own against the other 150 M16s.  Ammo used was Mk 262 Mod 0 (Black Hills- Sierra 77gr BTHP) from prone unsupported.

It would be cheaper at first to work with a different ammo, then maybe another barreled upper.  But bottom line is that the 5.56 can hit out to 500.

The 223/556 is fine out to 500, both in lethality and accuracy given the proper BULLET is selected.  Since you barrel is a Bushie, I will presume it is 1/9.  Shoot some 69/68 gr Match rounds to give you extended range.  However, you need to practice, as there will be a good amount of drop coming from that 14.5 barrel compared to a 20".

ETA:  I should have read the thread (Combat Diver)!

I know I sound like a broken record but.   If you want to shoot that far with accuracy  then My opinion would be get a 16" min  or an 18" would be better CUSTOM barrel. You can get cut rifled barrels for around $300.  match the twist with the bullet you want to shoot.  And use good ammo.

More velocity from a longer barrel will not get you that much more power.

A .308 will get you twice the power but you will need a new gun.

Get you an upper in 6.8 spc or maybe 6.5 and step up about 60% in power.
